Hello again

Further to the previous email this hazard is now more serious.

Many students will be using this bike lane from Monday and the hazard will "trip" a bike up, causing the rider to fall into the path of vehicles.

All repairs to the road need to have the bollards remain in place until the bitumen is reinstated.

Please contact me regarding the action the council it taking to remove this hazard and prevent re-occurance with other kerbing repair jobs.

Thanks and regards

Road surface Intervention Criteria - cyclists

Road surface faults that exceed 20mm in depth or height are a hazard to cyclists. In addition to the risk associated with impact, a cyclist that swerves to avoid impact is at high risk of collision from a vehicle that did not expect the manoeuvre by the cyclist.

Any fault in the road surface from the kerb, to approx 2.5 metres out (being the path a cyclist takes passing a parked vehicle) is a hazard to cyclist.

Below are photos taken outside 76 Winston Ave (Melrose Park). This is a “Bikeway”. There are two service covers, both having a dip exceeding 20mm.

The photos show that these service covers are in the area that the cyclist uses. The cyclist must swerve around them, yet the cyclist must also negotiate traffic that is behind them and car doors that open in front of them.

In these instances if the cyclist swerves to avoid impact with the service cover they will have an accident with either the passing car or the opening door.

Dear Anthony,

Council has received an email received from a resident of Holdfast Bay with respect to the subsided Telstra pit adjacent the pedestrian pram ramp at the corner of Anzac Highway and Grove Street, Glenelg East.

Attached is a copy of the photo detailing the area of concern for your reference.

Given that this presents an immediate hazard to cyclists and pedestrian, can you please ensure that Telstra staff inspect and organise necessary works as soon as possible.

Many Thanks

Kind Regards

Coroner calls on State Government to provide extra funding for safe shared pathways

FROM
http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,23516990-2862,00.html

April 10, 2008 02:40pm
A DITCH on a Melbourne bike path was a "hidden trap" that directly
contributed to the death of a cyclist, a coroner has found.

Robert Graham, 55, broke his neck and subsequently died after hitting
a culvert and being flung over the handlebars of his bicycle on a
popular bike track in Melbourne's north on February 27, 2007.

The impact severed his spinal chord and paralysed him from the neck down.

He died on March 2 last year after agreeing to have his life support
at the Austin Hospital switched off.

Coroner Dyson Hore-Lacy today found that the culvert was a "classic,
hidden trap" and that the local Nillumbik Shire Council had a duty of
care to maintain the bike path.

The culvert "caused Mr Graham's fall and contributed to his death," Mr
Hore-Lacy said in his finding.

Mr Hore-Lacy delivered two key recommendations in his finding.

He called on the Victorian government to consider providing extra
funding to local councils to allow them to maintain and develop safe
shared pathways.

He also recommended the government undertake a review of Australian
standards and guidelines relevant to Victoria for shared pathways.

I left a message this week on your phone in regards to two hazards
that you replied to on 26 Feb (Scott and Oleandar streets).

Your email stated they were the care and concern of SA Water.

SA Water have suggested the hazard is the responsibility of the council.

I would prefer to speak to you about these two hazards (Trim 08/7220

Dear Administrator Road Repair,

Thank you for your email regarding the inspection covers in Scott Street and Oleander Street, South Brighton that in your opinion present a road hazard to cyclists.

This infrastructure is under the care of control of SA Water and/or its contractors United Water.

I would encourage you again to raise your concerns with the parties mentioned above.

Hazard, Cycle path, Celtic Ave

Hello council@marion.sa.gov.au

There are many faults in the road surface in the Celtic Ave bike lane
heading East from Bradley to South roads.

Some faults are uneven service covers, some are dips in bitumen, and
some areas have bitumen missing.

There are at least 6 hazards in this section that exceed 20mm in
depth. Where the bitumen is missing the edge is 90degrees.

I did not have time to photograph and record each fault as I had an
appointment to meet.

I can be contacted on 0418 833 786 if more information is needed.
