Hazards - Anzac Highway bicycle lane - West of Beckman St

http://roadrepair.blogspot.com/2008/11/anzac-highway-bike-lane-west-of-beckman.html

Hello
(mail@holdfast.sa.gov.au and mitcham@mitchamcouncil.sa.gov.au)

[21 Feb 2009 - This email was also sent to Mitcham, however also sent to West Torrens citymgr@wtcc.sa.gov.au as it is also in their council area]

The link above is to photos of the Anzac Highway bicycle lane between Beckman and Brighton Roads.

These hazards were reported to the Department of Transport on 18 Nov 2008 (1800 018 313 road and traffic light report hotline), however they indicated that the kerb issues (and the edge of the bitumen to the kerb) are councils responsibilities. (Note: I sent an email to the wrong council at the time and no response was given to allert me to the mistake)

Recently a cyclist fell on this stretch of road, requiring an ambulance to attend. I do not have any information to the cause or circumstances regarding the accident.

Please have the hazards along Anzac Highway (and connecting side-roads) removed to prevent a cyclist injury or accident.

The hazards vary, from cracks in the concrete, to square edge to the bitumen (or ruts) that with 'catch' and bike tyre and throw the cyclist into the roadway. Many hazards are near, or at intersections with side roads, adding a further hazard to a cyclist who is both signalling and observing traffic while negotiating the turn.

In addition to the risk of impact with the road surface irregularities, there is a risk of collision from passing vehicles not expecting a cyclist to change position on the road to avoid impact.

Please contact me to advise the progress councils will be making to remove these hazards.

Reported 19 Nov 2008, I have not received a reply.

After my report, the hazard was painted yellow, but no other action made to remove the hazard.

The original report (19 Nov) used an image taken from Google Street, indicating the hazard has been there for a long time.

Please advise when this hazard will be removed.

Stormwater cover - Jetty and Brighton Rds

The attached photos show the replacement steel cover with very dodgy welding.

This is a "bogus" repair with poor welding.

This cover will not prevent a re-occurrence of the problem (collapsing) as the welds are inadequate.

Excellent fill at kerb repair site

This is an excellent example of correct fill after kerb repairs and before the bitumen is reinstated.

The hazard to cyclists is reduced because:
- The surface of the fill is compacted well and narrow bike tyres do not sink into the gravel
- The fill height is level to the edge of the bitumen and is also well compacted at the edge
- There is minimal loose gravel in the gutter or on the road

The delay to have the bitumen reinstated here has been lengthy, but the hazard has been minimised with the effort made when filling and compacting the area.

The area may require some maintenance in patches in the event of rain or further delays to reinstate the bitumen, however deterioration will be slower.

Please pass on my thanks to the staff or contractors. I am sure all cyclists are greatful.

Dear Sir / Madam,

I use the Westside Bikeway regularly and noticed yesterday [14-1-09] that the frame has returned on the corner of Anzac Hwy and Grove St.

Last year [2008] a similar frame stood in that same location for many  weeks before it finally disappeared although no repairs had been  undertaken.

Unless repairs can be undertaken in a timely manner I think  the frame represents more of a hazard to the community than the Telstra pit or the uneven footpath !

Yesterday the frame had fallen over and was obstructing the footpath in a manner potentially dangerous to the unsuspecting footpath / bikeway users.

Please see the attachment which you may use for any related purpose but please do not forward my e-mail address etc to any other recipients without my permission.

I hope this information / photo is useful feedback for you and helps you with your commendable work.

Yours sincerely,

                                 NAME WITHHELD BY REQUEST.

Dear Anthony,

Council has received an email received from a resident of Holdfast Bay with respect to the subsided Telstra pit adjacent the pedestrian pram ramp at the corner of Anzac Highway and Grove Street, Glenelg East.

Attached is a copy of the photo detailing the area of concern for your reference.

Given that this presents an immediate hazard to cyclists and pedestrian, can you please ensure that Telstra staff inspect and organise necessary works as soon as possible.

Many Thanks

Kind Regards

Ben Wright

REPEATED Hazard advice, Esplanade 5090dz

The hazard on the Esplanade reported 29 Nov has not been removed.

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Road Repair Australia <roadrepair@gmail.com>

There is a 60mm plus hole where an unsealed trench on the Esplande [sic], west side near Marine Parade ( in section of Esplanade [sic] where the footpath works are in progress.

The hazard is approx 1 metre out from the left edge, which will either be hit by cyclists, or cause a cyclist to swerve unexpectedly.

The road is narrowed by the works, and a cyclist moving 1 metre will collide with passing vehicles that do not expect the change in direction by the cyclist avoiding the hazard.

This is a popular route for cyclists and the hole will cause damage or injury if struck.

If there is any delay in reinstating the bitumen please monitor unsealed sections so hazards are prevented.

Hazard - Sturt Rd - Glass in Bike lane

There is shattered glass in the bike lane in front of Marion Council Chambers. I think it is from the bus shelter glass.

It has been there a week. I noticed it there and asumed it would cleaned up as part of fixing the bus shelter. If not, i would have thought staff at Marion Council Chambers would have noticed it and acted on it.

Please remove the broken glass to prevent cycle punctures or other injuries indirectly caused by the glass.
