Hazard - Tarlton - Mosely streets

There is an edge of bitumen to the kerb that is 20 to 60 mm high and in line with direction of travel. This edge will "trip" a cyclist and cause them to fall into the path of passing vehicles.

 

Please remove this hazard on Tarlton St, heading North, near Mosely street.

Delays to remove hazard of service covers

As with all sunken or faulty service covers reported to United water, they
are slow to remove the hazard, often not removing the hazard at all.

King George SIP - Reported to Maria Kourtesis JP, May 2009

This Service Inspection Point (SIP) cover is sunken in excess of 30mm (the ruler is green for 20mm, then red).

The sunken Service Inspection Point (SIP) will cause damage and personal injury. A cyclist changing direction to avoid the SIP is at risk of colliding with a passing vehicle. Drivers are also aggravated by having to drive slowly behind a cyclist who is in the way.

Being on a corner, this SIP is a hazard for a cyclist attempting to indicate a turn (one handed).

Reported to Maria Kourtesis JP (Liberal Candidate for Bright) at a street corner meeting at the corner of Harrow and King George streets.

The challenge was set to have the hazard removed. This was in the context of the issue that these hazards are NOT attended to, even if reported. See the topic "United Water" (click to view).

King William St - 4 weeks - No action

This hazard was brought to the attention of the Deputy Lord Mayor of Adelaide, Stephen Yarwood, at a Capital City Forum held on Friday 15 May.

The topic was "Cycling Towards a Healthy and Sustainable Community".

Murray Tce - Service Inspection Points (SIPs)

The video shows the impact that a sunken service cover has to a cyclist. This bicycle is a mountain bike with front suspension. The impact to a road or tourer bike is more severe.

In addition to the risks of injury or property damage on impact, there is a risk of collision from passing vehicles not expecting a cyclist to change position on the road to avoid impact with an SIP.

The Service Inspection Points (SIPs) shown in this video (38 Murray Tce, Oaklands Pk) have not been corrected. There were two down the road that have been raised, but no action to fix these.

United water Service have been contacted today (8381 0300) and the sip at 38 Murray Tce reported (Job Number W1162287).

This is in many places on Sturt Rd. The video is taken between Morphett and Brighton Roads heading West.

As stated on the blogsite "The edge of this bitumen will "trip" a cyclist up and throw them onto the road, in front of the passing traffic."

Please take the necessary action to remove this hazard at all sections of Sturt road.

124 South Tce. The Branch hangs low and as i cycled under it vast night (no parked cars ) it hit my helmet and broke my helmet light. There is also a risk of collision with a passing car who would not expect a cyclist to change line of travel to avoid, or as a result of, hitting branches.

The section of Railway Tce South from Goodwood Rd to Devo Tce South is very poor and a hazard to cyclists. There are many rough patches, and a cyclist that stikes the rough patch, or avoids the rough patch, is at risk of collision with a passing vehicle..

Travelling West on Addison (Brighton East BikeWay), then turning into Winton Ave, the road is very rough and hazardous to ride over.

When travelling West on Addison Rd, the road surface at the corner of Addison Rd and Winton Ave is very uneven and hazourdous for cycling. This corner is part of the Brighton East BikeWay. A cyclist impacting the bumps, or avoiding the bumps, will change direction unexpectedly and may collide with a passing vehicle.

Please also note the BikeWay sign is missing at this corner.

Lewis St SIPs

Heading West on Lewis St, South Brighton, there are two Service Inspection Points (SIPs) that exceed 30mm in height variation (sunken).

Reported to United Water (8381 0333) job number W1106221.

Railway Tce South - Goodwood

The section of Railway Tce South, from Goodwood Rd to Devo St South is very poor.

Here is a video of this section of the road. A cyclist hitting, or avoiding the rough patches is at risk of being hit by a passing vehicle as the driver would not expect a sudden change in the line of travel. Also, drivers become aggravated having to go slow because of a cyclist in the way.

The road surface next to the kerb repairs needs attention to remove the hazard to cyclists.

 

The edge of the bitumen (up to 60mm deep) will trip a cyclist up, causing them to fall onto the road and into the path of traffic.

 

This area has been under repair since Jan 2009 and while the unsealed surface was ok during summer, with rain the whole section is now hazardous.

As a minimum please fill and compact the area next to the kerb repairs.

 

To remove the hazard please reinstate the bitumen.-

This is an excellent example of correct fill after kerb repairs and before the bitumen is reinstated.

The hazard to cyclists is reduced because:
- The surface of the fill is compacted well and narrow bike tyres do not sink into the gravel
- The fill height is level to the edge of the bitumen and is also well compacted at the edge
- There is minimal loose gravel in the gutter or on the road

The delay to have the bitumen reinstated here has been lengthy, but the hazard has been minimised with the effort made when filling and compacting the area.

The area may require some maintenance in patches in the event of rain or further delays to reinstate the bitumen, however deterioration will be slower.

Please pass on my thanks to the staff or contractors. I am sure all cyclists are greatful.
